When People Try to Edit Your Life.

You ever get a message from one of your ex-followers saying they didn’t like your latest post and that you should delete it? Like… hi, Karen. I didn’t realize you were the Director of Content Approvals for My Life, here to ensure I comply with your personal taste guidelines. Did I miss the email where we agreed you’d be my editor in chief?

The irony is, I’ve been here before only the last time it wasn’t an ex-follower, it was a CEO. Yes, the CEO of a company I worked for, who once pulled me aside and said,

“If you want your career to advance, you need to stop exposing corporate America and tone it down.”

Tone. It. Down. Because nothing says “we value your voice” like telling someone to wrap it in duct tape before it makes anyone uncomfortable.

Apparently, the secret to corporate success is to become the human version of a lukewarm cup of tea — no bite, no spice, no strong flavor. Just safe, bland, and unlikely to upset anyone with power. Be beige. Be agreeable. Be the kind of person whose LinkedIn profile reads like it was written entirely by HR-approved buzzwords: “collaborative, synergistic, team-oriented visionary.” (Translation: I never rock the boat and I will never mention that the boat is sinking.)

And here’s the kicker — whether it’s a CEO in a corner office or an ex-follower in my inbox, the message is the same:

“Be quieter. Be smaller. Be less you.”

Let me save you the suspense — absolutely not.

My content is not for everyone. And that’s intentional. Unfortunately, if you can’t take sarcasm, you and I are not going to align. And that’s okay — not everyone gets my humor, my perspective, or my unapologetic willingness to point out when the emperor is strutting around in nothing but a lanyard and a false sense of authority.

When someone says, “I didn’t like that post,” what they usually mean is, “That post made me feel something I wasn’t ready to feel.” When someone says, “Stop exposing corporate America,” what they really mean is, “Stop pointing out the flaws I’ve either chosen to ignore or built my career protecting.”

I’ve learned something important: if your goal is to please everyone, you will lose yourself in the process. You’ll sand off every edge, filter every word, and eventually forget what you actually think. You’ll build a public version of yourself so watered down it’s basically a corporate mission statement — technically fine, but absolutely forgettable.

And that’s not me.

The truth is, corporate culture thrives on silence. It requires it. It runs on people looking the other way, nodding politely, and swallowing every ounce of frustration because they’re afraid to be “unprofessional.” But the second you stop playing along? Oh, people notice. They notice because boldness is contagious — and contagious things are dangerous to systems built on control.

So no, I won’t delete the post. I won’t soften my language so it’s palatable for people who think sarcasm is “negative energy.” And I certainly won’t pretend my voice is an accident that needs “adjusting.”

Quote of the day:

“If my sarcasm offends you, it’s probably because it’s pointing at something you’d rather keep in the dark.”

And to those who can’t handle that? It’s okay to unfollow. I don’t need you to like everything I say — but I’m also not going to rearrange my personality like a piece of furniture just to keep you comfortable.

The real career risk isn’t saying too much. It’s spending decades saying nothing only to realize one day that nobody ever knew who you were, because you never gave them a chance.

So to my ex-follower who wanted me to delete my post: thank you. You’ve reminded me that the people who stay are the ones who get it and the ones who leave? They’re just making more room for the people who were meant to be here in the first place.
